From the rocky North Shore cliffs, Split Rock Lighthouse guided freighters safely across the stormy waters of Lake Superior for half a century.
Led by the U.S. Steel company president, a delegation descended upon Washington, D.C. to lobby for a light station. Originally known as Stony Point, the name Split Rock was first used by the lobbyists when describing the location, and the name stuck. In early 1907, Congress appropriated $75,000 for a lighthouse and fog signal at Split Rock.
The U.S. Lighthouse Service completed construction of the 7.6-acre facility in 1910, and Split Rock Lighthouse was born.

The Aerial Lift Bridge, earlier known as the Aerial Bridge or Aerial Ferry Bridge, is a landmark in the Canal Park area of Duluth, MN.
The bridge began life in 1905 as the United States' first transporter bridge: Only one other was ever constructed in the country, Sky Ride in Chicago. The span was converted in 1929–1930 to a vertical-lift bridge — also rather uncommon, although there are six such bridges along Ontario's Welland Canal — and continues to operate today. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 1973. The bridge is owned and operated by the City of Duluth. The United States Army Corps of Engineers maintains a nearby maritime museum.

Little Manitou Falls is located in Wisconsin's Pattison State Park , a few miles upstream from Big Manitou Falls.
Despite the name, this is still a decent sized waterfall, especially when the river is high. Unlike the big falls, you can get right up close to this one.

THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF LEGENDS surrounding Uncle Harvey’s Mausoleum in Duluth's Canal Park.
Some stories allege it was a bunker or an ice house, and a persistent tale claims it once housed an illegal casino during Prohibition. A historical marker placed by the local tourism authority offers a more pragmatic stance: “The true story is the unromantic but intriguing account of an impractical idea.”
The concrete structure 30 feet away from the Duluth shore looks like an upturned house jutting out of out of the lake. It’s often used by nesting birds, and in the summer visitors swim out to sunbathe on it or dive from the top. Also called “the cribs”, it is the foundation of an unloading dock built by a local businessman Harvey Whitney in 1919.

The Wisconsin Point Lighthouse, located near Superior, WI.
The light and attached fog horn building sits within a 10-mile long sand bar – stretching between the ports of Duluth and Superior. This sand bar makes the Duluth–Superior Harbor one of the safest harbors in the world. It is "reputedly the longest freshwater sand bar in the world" and is split by this opening near its center, where the lighthouse is located. The Minnesota side of the opening is known as "Minnesota Point" (Park Point) and the Wisconsin side is known as "Wisconsin Point." It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It stands erect at 70 ft. tall.
